Causes of Uveitis
The cause of uveitis is often unknown, but may be linked to an injury to the eye (traumatic iritis), previous eye surgery or a widespread illness such as:
- an inflammatory condition, such as arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis of the lower back), sarcoidosis, psoriasis or inflammatory bowel disease,
- a bacterial, viral or fungal infection such as gastroenteritis, tuberculosis (TB), Crohn’s disease, Lyme disease or gonorrhea, or
- an autoimmune disorder or disease (when the body attacks its own organs) such as Reiter's syndrome, Behçet’s syndrome or AIDS.
In general, uveitis is not an inherited condition.
Posterior uveitis may arise because of an unusual inflammation or a reaction against an infection in the eye.
