Prevention of Varicose veins
Here are some ways you can try to prevent varicose veins:
- Walk around lots – don’t sit or stand in one place for long periods of time.
- To help the blood to flow easily, don’t cross your legs when sitting down or sleep sitting down in a chair.
- Get up and stretch when on long journeys such as on a coach or plane.
- Compression stockings are available to lower the raised pressure in the legs. Not everybody needs them so you should speak to your GP or pharmacist for advice.
- Lose weight if you are overweight.
- Make sue you have a healthy diet, with enough fibre, to avoid constipation.
- Elevate (lift up) your legs if you have been standing still for a long time to allow the blood in the veins to empty.
- Don’t wear tight underwear or clothes.
- Keep active by taking regular exercise.
- Stop smoking.
