Symptoms of Visual impairment

The most common symptom of sight loss is a steady reduction in vision, with distant objects becoming more difficult to distinguish. However, there can be many different symptoms of sight loss other than reduction of vision. For example:

  • Sub-acute glaucoma may cause a dull, aching pain, foggy vision and rainbow coloured rings around lights.
  • Macular degeneration causes distorted vision; straight lines appear wavy and objects appear larger or smaller than they really are.
  • Cataracts can cause blurred vision, colours appear faded and bright lights become dazzling.
  • Dry eye syndrome causes a burning, gritty sensation in the eyes.
  • Diabetic retinopathy causes double vision and difficulty focussing.

The symptoms of sight loss depend greatly on the cause. Some conditions bring on a sudden and severe loss of vision, while others cause gradual sight deterioration.
