Treatment of Watering eye

Watering from the overproduction of tears is treated by removing the cause, if possible.

If the lacrimal duct is blocked, this may respond to a wash-through with salt water.  If this does not work, the duct can sometimes be opened by carefully passing a small blunt metal probe along the duct.  This may be effective in babies but is rarely successful in adults.

For adults a more serious procedure known as a dacryo-cysto-rhinostomy may be used in which a new opening is made through into the nose.

Tear overflow from ectropion is treated by simple plastic surgery that returns the eyelid to its proper position. If the condition has been long neglected, however, this treatment may be impossible because the lid will have shrunk.
