The neck of the womb (cervix) is gradually enlarged with small metal rods (dilators) and held open. Der Hals der Gebärmutter (Zervix) wird schrittweise erweitert mit kleinen Metallstäben (dilators) und offen gehalten. This stretching of the cervix is called dilation. When the opening is wide enough, a spoon-shaped instrument (curette) is inserted and used  to scrape the surface layer of the womb.
