Some temporary side effects can be experienced after an IUS is fitted.  These include spotting or light bleeding between periods, headaches and breast tenderness.  All these symptoms should be temporary and disappear within three months. Very rarely, an IUS will come through the cervix or womb (perforation) or be pushed out of the womb (expulsion).  The IUS will need to be checked every three months in case of expulsion, as the woman may not be aware that this has happened.
