In most cases, when someone dies, a GP or hospital doctor can certify the medical cause of death, which is then registered by the Registrar of Births and Deaths. A death occurring in the following situations is reported to the coroner by the police or by a doctor.  The Registrar may also report a death to the coroner. In these cases the coroner may arrange a post- mortem. In questi casi il coroner può disporre un post-mortem. They will then arrange an inquest unless the post-mortem shows that death was due to natural causes, or has established the cause of sudden death. Approximately 62% of the deaths reported to the coroner undergo post-mortems, with approximately 12% of reported deaths resulting in inquests.
