Without prompt treatment, a build up of bilirubin in the brain can lead to a condition called kernicterus. This can lead to brain damage or even death, so it is important that high levels of bilirubin are treated immediately. If the levels of bulirubin rise dramatically about 6-7 days after birth it may be caused by breast-milk jaundice.
